Choosing a metal staircase

For many years installed exclusively outdoors, the metal staircase is now finding its way into our homes. Very stylish, this open structure in a variety of shapes can even become the centrepiece of your interior decoration. It blends in elegantly, and its architecture gives a very contemporary retro-chic style. These metal structures are very much in vogue.

Despite its lightness, which is an asset, its strength is undeniable. You will appreciate the many customisation options it offers,
both in appearance and in colour. Its airy design makes it an excellent choice for small spaces.

Which staircase shapes?

Installing a made-to-measure metal staircase gives your home a unique character. The choice of staircase shape depends above all on the constraints and possibilities of your interior. We offer many models
to combine these technical requirements with your aesthetic expectations.

The size of the stairwell opening is an essential factor to take into account.

For the smallest openings, the helical staircase or spiral staircase takes up the least space. It is built in a round or square well and turns through 270°. You can increase this angle by adding a turning landing, which reduces the slope.

Medium-sized stairwell openings will also let you install a spiral staircase or a half-turn staircase, which has two 90° angles. It therefore turns through 180° and forms a “U”. Its entry is thus opposite its exit.

Finally, the widest openings make it possible to install a quarter-turn staircase that turns through a 90° angle, and a straight staircase that runs along a single axis.
This is the most classic configuration. Easy to design and install, it is the least expensive.

The main metals used

Depending on your wishes and your budget, the staircase can be made from three different materials. Aluminium offers the best value for money in the range. However, it is mainly reserved for outdoor installations, as its finishes are less attractive. Although it is hard-wearing and very light, it is less strong than staircases made from other metals. For daily use, this model is not recommended.

Stainless steel

Its retro style is much appreciated. Very clean-lined, it brings a  contemporary touch to your interior. With a shiny appearance, it is pleasant to the touch and does not rust. However, it is fairly sensitive to scratches and stains, especially water, which can leave marks. It is also the most expensive of the metal staircases.

Steel

This is the material most often chosen. It comes in a wide range of colours and you can choose the look. A raw finish gives a more natural effect. Ready to paint, it is easy to customise. Be sure to treat it against corrosion beforehand. A varnished finish, on the other hand, gives a softer feel and a glossy look. It does not require anti-corrosion treatment.

Very fashionable, the steel staircase fits into modern decors and offers a highly sought-after vintage look. It has two small drawbacks: it is a little noisy and scratches fairly  easily.

The advantages and disadvantages of a metal staircase

The positives

You will appreciate the sturdiness of these structures. It is an investment, with no wear problems, unlike other, more commonly used materials.

Strength for little weight. A metal staircase is much lighter than concrete, for example. It is an interesting option if you want to install it on an upper floor. It also suits small spaces particularly well.

Installation is very quick and easy.

Finally, it appeals for its modern design and its customisation possibilities: structure, choice of metal and finishes. It can be painted, and you can even combine it with other materials such as wood, glass, etc.

The price varies depending on the metal chosen, as well as the shape of the staircase and the design of the balustrade.

: having a metal staircase installed by a professional in a home more than two years old entitles you to a reduced VAT rate.

The negatives

There are a few minor drawbacks to consider. A metal staircase is noisier and its treads are more slippery. However, it is easy to remove these issues by combining other materials with your staircase. Glass or wooden treads add a very fashionable touch and solve this problem. Or, more simply, add a non-slip mat on the treads. Specific maintenance is needed to avoid rust stains appearing.

Staircase standards

All our constructions take safety rules into account.

Standard NF P21-210 is not mandatory, but we strongly advise complying with it in case you later sell or let your home. These are important precautions to limit the risk of falls, which can be dangerous.

For the safety and comfort of a staircase used every day, its slope must not be too steep. An incline between 25 and 45° is recommended. The treads are wide enough, at least 70 cm, and for metal creations, non-slip coverings are provided. We advise not exceeding 18 steps, with the spacing between each one being the same. It is generally between 16 and 21 cm.

It is also essential to think about the guardrail. This is the railing that prevents falls. Its handrail is at 90 cm and the balusters are spaced 11 cm apart at most.

For these technical constraints, our professionals provide you with information and advice.

Finally, you need to think about the electrical installation to light the staircase properly. A switch at the bottom and another at the top, wired as a two-way circuit.
