An example of enlarging an opening and reinforcing it with a steel structure, carried out in Antibes, in the Alpes-Maritimes
Before any work, OMPT protects and secures the premises. We reinforce the structure with vertical propping. This means placing props and timber planks at strategic points. The props are vertical steel posts that temporarily support a wall and stabilise the floor during the works.
This setup then allowed demolition with an electric saw and a specialist machine. This stage also included cutting the existing beam to obtain a ceiling height of 2.54 metres. To continue the job, we then cleared the rubble.
Before starting to reinforce the opening with a steel structure, we cast reinforced concrete footings. This spreads the load of the future HEA180 columns properly. The structure needed to strengthen the opening here consists of HEA180 columns and a double IPE180 beam. They are joined together with 10mm-thick steel base plates, by welding and bolting. We also used steel gussets to help spread the load of the double IPE180 beam.
Once all the work was done, the steel structures were painted with anti-rust paint to ensure better long-term protection.
In keeping with OMPT's commitments, the site was cleaned completely and handed back in perfect condition.
