Breaking through a load-bearing wall

Clamart

Project carried out in Clamart in the load-bearing walls category

One of our projects took place in Clamart. It involved a load-bearing wall opening (more precisely, in a central spine wall) on the ground floor of a building. Among the work our BET engineers carried out there was the construction of a steel portal frame. As with any building work, construction steps and standards must be followed:

How did we proceed

Protecting the site is the first thing to do. This is done with a tarpaulin and a hardboard panel. Next, the props are made and prepared so they can be placed vertically on either side of the future opening. We then proceed with the creation of an opening in the load-bearing wall, which means breaking through a load-bearing wall. Given its size (8 m²), we use an electric chainsaw and a special machine. At the same time, the rubble is removed.

A reinforced concrete footing is installed to support the steel column. It measures 15x15x30. The vertical column is an HEA 140 mm section, fixed by welding and bolting. For this we also use threaded rods (one of type 2×1 and the other of type 8×16) as well as a SPIT.TRIGA M20 anchor.

Next comes the installation of the HEB 200 mm beam, 400 cm long. It is sealed with a quick-setting cement in order to obtain a strong structure. For a more reliable result, steel shims and non-shrink mortars should not be left out. There is also the 10 mm thick base plate, the welds and the bolting.

Finally, we build a fire-resistant casing using Placoflam plasterboard. For a good finish, a clear anti-rust paint is a welcome addition, particularly for metal structures. The site can then be cleaned.
