Reinforcing a recessed reinforced concrete beam after demolishing partitions in Nice

OMPT GROUPE, a specialist in structural reinforcement, opening load-bearing walls and underpinning on the Côte d'Azur, recently carried out a technical operation in Nice to strengthen a buried reinforced concrete (RC) beam that had been weakened after interior partitions were demolished.

In many buildings, some partitions may partly help carry loads. Removing them can therefore change the overall structural behaviour, requiring a suitable reinforcement intervention to guarantee the stability of the structure.

Structural diagnosis and the engineering office's recommendations

Before any work began, a full structural analysis was carried out with a partner structural engineering office. This essential step checks the feasibility of the project and defines the most suitable technical solutions, in line with current standards.

Following this study, the structural engineer recommended installing a steel reinforcement under the existing beam, to effectively take up the loads that were no longer redistributed after the partitions were demolished.

Installing the reinforcement with an HEA220 steel beam

The chosen solution was to install an HEA 220 steel beam, positioned on the underside of the existing reinforced concrete beam.

This technical work went through the following stages:

  • Putting in place temporary shoring to keep the structure safe during the works
  • Localised opening of the bearing points in the load-bearing walls
  • Sealing the HEA220 beam into the load-bearing walls at each end
  • Precise positioning of the steel beam under the existing RC beam
  • Gradual transfer of the loads to the new structure

This type of reinforcement ensures optimal load transfer while limiting heavy work on the existing structure.

A reliable solution for strengthening existing structures

Thanks to this work, the reinforced concrete beam that had been weakened was effectively strengthened, guaranteeing the safety and longevity of the structure.

This kind of project perfectly illustrates OMPT GROUPE's know-how in the following areas:

  • Reinforcing reinforced concrete beams
  • Remedial work after demolishing load-bearing or partially load-bearing partitions
  • Installing steel structures (HEA, HEB, IPN)
  • Structural work in renovation

As on every site, the works were carried out in strict compliance with the technical recommendations and safety standards, ensuring a durable, compliant result.
