OUVERTURE MURS PORTEURS TREMIES handles all your steel reinforcement of timber beams and strengthening work
Substantial expertise in strengthening existing structures allows OMPT to showcase its know-how. Among the jobs our company commonly carries out, reinforcing existing timber beams with a steel structure is a frequent one.
Steel strengthening is always recommended following a technical study by a BET and has its own specific features.
Before carrying out the steel reinforcement, we cut recesses into a wall to create a reinforced concrete padstone. This operation also required cutting a chase in the existing partition to allow a 70x70x5 mm square tube to be installed, using an electric chainsaw and a machine designed specially for this purpose.
We then created a 15 x 20 non-shrink padstone, 20 cm thick, in reinforced concrete set into the wall to support the HEA120 beam, along with a 20 x 20 non-shrink reinforced concrete footing, 20 cm thick, for fixing a 70x70x5 mm square tube post
The post was supplied and installed as a 70×70 square tube, 5 mm thick and 2.66 linear m long, to support the HEA120 beam, welded to a base plate at the foot with a lag screw and embedded in the existing partition. Bolting and welding, as well as sealing with rapid-set mortar, were provided for. All these operations were carried out with the care they require and in compliance with building standards.
We supplied and installed the 2.77 m long HEA120 beam according to the diagram defined by the BET. It was placed and welded on the reinforced concrete padstone at one end, with packing using non-shrink mortar. The HEA120 beam was then wedged against the existing timber beam using steel shims or metal plates driven in tightly. Finally, spot welding and non-shrink mortar completed the work. The whole was also to be connected to a 70×70 mm square tube post by a 10 mm plate welded to the head of the post with M12 bolts. Everything had been meticulously planned so that the work complied with the BET's recommendations for this job to consolidate and reinforce the existing timber structure.
Anti-rust paint must be applied to the steel structure to ensure lasting protection.
Protecting and cleaning the site are routine practice at OMPT, which hands over every job in the best possible condition.
